The book of Judges follows the book of Joshua. In Moses and Joshua, God used strong men to lead Israel. When Joshua took them into the land God told him to take the land and kill off the inhabitants because they were unclean and worshipped idols and false Gods. God did not want his people contaminated with their sin. After Joshua dies, the people “loosen up,” and let some of the inhabitants remain and live with them, serving them. This disobedience led to each man doing what was right in his own eyes.
