After rebuking and restoring Peter, Jesus had to follow with yet another rebuke. “Then Peter, turning about, seeth the disciple whom Jesus loved following;” and asked, “Lord, and what shall this man do?” (John 21: 20,21) It’s easy to imagine Peter still smarting from his rebuke, noticing the “teacher’s pet,” and wanting John to also be corrected. But Jesus, in His way, told Peter to mind his own business. Peter and John were always together and very close but Peter in a moment of weakness fell prey to comparing himself with John in Jesus eyes. Many Bible greats indulged in pity-parties. Rachael and Leah, Joseph and his brothers, Aaron and Miriam, Saul and David, and the Prodigal’s older brother. Peter stumbled, from “Feed my sheep,” to what about John? It was only because Peter took his eyes off Jesus and on to minding John’s business.
