If you’ve been saved, your conscience was convicted by the Holy Spirit. It was tender, humble, receptive. Is it still tender? If God smote your heart today, how would you respond? Would you feel a need to explain or would you be grieved and repent? David was a good, and a fast, repenter. God sent a preacher to smote his heart. God gives us a preacher to goad, exhort and convict us. There is no better feeling than a good conscience toward God and no more miserable feeling than ignoring His voice.
