The Bible has many verses that recommend seeking wise counsel before making weighty decisions. But it is of great importance that you beware of seeking counsel from the wrong counselors. It’s risky to take counsel from anyone who won’t bear the consequences of your decision. Amonon’s friend did not suffer for Amnon’s terrible choice. Rehoboam forsook the counsel of the old men and took the counsel of the young men he grew up with (1 Kings 12). Good rules for seeking counselors: 1) Are they saved and living for God? Are they knowledgeable by study or experience? 3) Does the advice match God’s Word? Does the person have your best interest at heart? Do they love you enough to tell you what you don’t want to hear?
