Conviction by the Holy Spirit is felt in the conscience. Your heart, soul and mind are inseparable. Your conscience is connected to all three. We’re warned about how the world can sear the conscience, meaning it can no longer feel conviction. A terrible place to be where the Holy Spirit can’t get through to you! Paul tells how he exercises his conscience to avoid offence toward God and men. When we are saved, our consciene is purged by the Holy Spirit. Now, how we spend our time and who we spend it with—what we consume— will dull our conscience or exercise it. Church faithfulness, Bible reading, prayer and especially preaching nurtures our conscience. We need preaching that describes sin truthfully. Soft-pedaling sin sets up people for greater destruction. It’s like putting a nice sounding label on a bottle of strychnine. More poisonings will result.
